Fun Facts About Asphalt

Asphalt may not seem like the most interesting topic to read about, but when you consider how much asphalt is used to pave our roads and parking lots, it’s a viable commodity that isn’t going away anytime soon. If you are a commercial business or property manager, you understand how “curb appeal” can make or break a potential business deal. For that reason, it is best for you to know a little bit about the asphalt that coats your parking lot and what you can do to keep it in pristine shape through maintenance, thus saving you thousands of dollars down the line.

1. Asphalt is recycled at a rate of almost 99%! According to the National Asphalt Pavement Association, it is America’s most recycled product.

2. Asphalt can go by a number of names, including blacktop, bitumen, macadam and tarmac.

3. Asphalt was used by indigenous people in the 13th century as an adhesive for building tools and ceremonial items.

4. Over 90% of the 2.3 million miles of paved roads in America is asphalt.

5. John McAdam, in the 18th century, is the first known man to actually create a version of the asphalt we use today. He mixed stone and sand with tar to create a hard surface for roads and called it “macadam”.

6. Asphalt produces a smoother quieter ride than concrete. Studies have shown that with a smoother ride, fuel consumption is less. This is why over 90% of US Highways are made with asphalt.

7. Sealcoating a worn asphalt parking lot will bring out the black color and, if maintained properly, can be good for up to 30 years.

  • I love these articles sharing just the little facts about different paving materials. I didn’t know that asphalt was so recyclable! And the fact that sealcoating can bring out the color and last so long, I’m not sure why people don’t do it more often. Thanks for sharing!

  • I had no idea that asphalt was so recyclable. I actually thought it was one of the least recyclable materials, so I’m glad I was wrong! I agree that asphalt is smoother and quieter, because we have a portion of both concrete and asphalt on our freeway, and it’s a lot louder on the concrete portion.
